Item # TI2059 ...... Fall 2004

In 1815, the grizzly bear was given the Latin name ursus horribilis. Translated, it means "horrible bear." Weighing up to 1,000 pounds, with great strength, sharp teeth and claws as long as a human finger, he is indeed a formidable creature. Despite the grizzly's horrible reputation, he will try his best to avoid contact and conflict with man. In fact, most cases of bear attacks are the result of the bear being provoked or threatened within his own territory. So, let's leave them alone! The greatest threat to the grizzly is the invasion and destruction of their habitat by humans. Land development takes more of the grizzly's territory each day, but well-meaning nature lovers backpacking into bear country cause conflicts as well. A word of advice to anyone entering into grizzly country: Do so at your own risk.

Artist note: I would like to dedicate this artwork to the memory of the father of modern-day archery, Fred Bear. I have placed an arrowhead on the base of the statue beside Grizzly, in Fred's honor.

Approx height 9"
